 Sample Projects 5S

5S is a methodology for organizing, cleaning, developing, and sustaining a productive work environment and is the foundation of a performance improvement program. Do these points describe your company work areas?

  1. Space is crowded with parts, tools,  and materials causing productivity and safety concerns

  2. Often search for tools, fixtures, or supplies that cause downtime and delays

  3. The work area is not tour-ready every day

  4. Standardized work instructions are not available for each job

  5. Shop floor employees are not involved in maintenance and safety

  6. Continuous Improvement programs need more shop floor employee involvement

We work with our customers in two ways.

  • First, we can work with you to implement a sustainable 5S program in your facility through the involvement of your employees. We integrate maintenance and safety into the 5S program because that gets employees involved in those critical programs at the shop floor level.  This is a train-implement as we go program where we facilitate the training, the implementation, and coach throughout the implementation. If you have an interest in the "5S and Standardized Work Implementation" provide us some additional information about your situation and we will review it and contact you.  Click "5S Implementation" to provide your information.

  • Second, we provide a 2-day hands-on 5S training at our customer's facility conducted by one of our Senior Practitioners with years of 5S implementation experience. We use two areas of your facility during the trainings to teach and apply the training. So at the end of the training your employees better understand the concepts and have concrete plans defined for implementing 5S.  Contact us for your specific 5S training needs and we will get back with you.

We have excellent 5S training and implementation materials that we make available no matter how you work with us. There are two primary resources, the "5S Implementation Guide" and "5S Participant's Training Summary".

  • The 5S Implementation Guide is written narrative material that tells how to do a 5S implementation.  It is very much like a handbook, has 7 chapters plus Appendix, approximately 150 pages.  It leads you through how to prepare for 5S, how to kickoff the 5S program, and how to implement each of the 5Ss. The Appendix contains a 5S issues form, 5S communication board layout, red tag procedure, red tag log, yellow tag procedure, yellow tag log, Initial cleaning-paint-repair page, cleaning schedule example, 5s audit procedure, 5s audit form, audit tracking table, sample newsletter.

  • The 5S Participant's Training Summary is a presentation slide summary of the “5S Implementation Guide” in hard copy format.  It is approximately 140 slides with 2 slides per page.  Each Core Team member should have one of these.  It is the same material in hard copy form that the Facilitator presents electronically during the training.
